"Kick I" (stylized as "KiCk i"; pronounced as "kick one") is the fourth studio album by Venezuelan electronic record producer Arca. Recorded between Barcelona and London, the album was released on June 26, 2020 through XL Recordings.[1] "Kick I" was followed with singles such as "Nonbinary", "Time", "Mequetrefe" & "KLK". The album features artists such as Björk, Shygirl, and Sophie.[2] The album was nominated at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards for Best Dance/Electronic Album, as well as the 22nd Annual Latin Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album.[3][4]

Background[]

In 2020, Arca had released her first song in three years, "@@@@@", a 1 hour single.[5] On March 21, 2020, the album was leaked on the internet without knowledge from Arca.[6] It was rumored that the leak was from XL Recordings. Around April 2020, Arca had released the mix of "^^^^^".[7] Shortly after releasing the two prior releases, Arca had released the lead single to Kick I without any prior warning of the album, "Nonbinary", on April 30, 2020.[8] On May 20, 2020, Arca had announced the album and released the second single; "Time".[9][10] In the release month of Kick I, Arca had released the third and fourth single in a week, which were "Mequetrefe" and "KLK".[11][12]

Arca had stated about the album being more accessible than her previous albums via i-D: "That’s a beautiful nuance to zoom in on, and there’s no static answer. There’s a reaching out and opening up. For someone who has made music for so long, I haven’t done many interviews. There’s a part of me that’s like, wait, why am I afraid to connect? Let me take this opportunity to reach out in a different way with my music. Something more inviting, more like a celebration, a party that people want to go to."[13]
